A voting machine is a machine used to register and tabulate votes. The first voting machines were mechanical but it is increasingly more common to use electronic voting machines. Traditionally, a voting machine has been defined by the mechanism the system uses to cast votes and further categorized by the location where the system tabulates the votes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_machine

The Internet Research Agency (IRA; Russian: Агентство интернет-исследований, also known as Glavset[2] and known in Russian Internet slang as the Trolls from Olgino) is a Russian company, based in Saint Petersburg, engaged in online influence operations on behalf of Russian business and political interests. The January 2017 report issued by the United States Intelligence Community – Assessing Russian Activities and Intentions in Recent US Elections – described the Agency as a troll farm writing, "The likely financier of the so-called Internet Research Agency of professional trolls located in Saint Petersburg is a close Vladmir Putin ally with ties to Russian intelligence," noted that "they previously were devoted to supporting Russian actions in Ukraine—[and] started to advocate for President Donald Trump as early as December 2015." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Research_Agency

Universal Darwinism (also known as generalized Darwinism, universal selection theory,[1] or Darwinian metaphysics)[2][3][4] refers to a variety of approaches that extend the theory of Darwinism beyond its original domain of biological evolution on Earth. Universal Darwinism aims to formulate a generalized version of the mechanisms of variation, selection and heredity proposed by Charles Darwin, so that they can apply to explain evolution in a wide variety of other domains, including psychology, economics, culture, medicine, computer science and physics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Darwinism

The term global village represents the simplifying of the whole world into one village through the use of electronic media. Global village is also a term to express the constituting relationship between economics and other social sciences throughout the world. The term was coined by Canadian media theorist, Marshall McLuhan,[1] and popularized in his books The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man (1962) and Understanding Media (1964) McLuhan changed the way the world thought about media and technology ever since his use of the word in his book [2]. McLuhan described how electric technology has contracted the globe into a village[3] because of the instantaneous movement of information from every quarter to every point at the same time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_village (more)

Adrian Slywotzky thinks the death of the R And D lab is starving the economy of big Innovation. The Venture Capital and initial public offering components of the business model are still in place; we just have to rebuild the upstream labs that focused on basic research, the headwaters for the whole innovation ecosystem. Science is funny. It's a crapshoot. It takes hundreds of people with high IQ-s, PhD-s, and an incredible curiosity, work ethic, and persistence. It also takes critical mass, lab support, the right equipment and instrumentation, peer review, etc. It takes open communication among peers, and other subtle but critical cultural factors. It takes a tolerance for risk. A tolerance for Failure. A willingness to think and apply innovation laterally (many of the big breakthroughs were originally aimed at other targets). It takes a Culture that attracts, encourages, and rewards the best minds.

Clifford Winston wrote Government Failure vs. Market Failure: Microeconomics Policy Research and Government Performance. ISBN:0815793898 Winston concludes that the cost of government failure may actually be considerably greater than the cost of market failure: "My search of the evidence is not limited to policy failures. I will report success stories, but few of them emerged." (more)

Hamish McKenzie (of SubStack): Subscriptions are bad for democracy? No way. The news media as an entity is getting weaker, both financially and in terms of political influence. None of this is happening because of subscriptions. A key reason it is happening is because for the last two decades the bulk of journalism has been give away online for free, the [[Web Ad] business for anything other than social media platforms has imploded, and now even the best publications are struggling to find a sustainable business model. Brian Micklethwait quotes John Holt on Educating Kids: What made these children such a joy to be with, and such a powerful influence on the other children, was not just their obvious Alertness, Imagination, Curiosity, good humour, High Spirits, and interest in many things, but their Energy, Vitality, Self Respect, Courage and above all, their true Independence.

The Sudbury model of democratic education is named after the school that pioneered it - Sudbury Valley School. Since it was founded in 1968, the Framingham, Massachusetts school has been a source of inspiration for dozens of schools and institutions, and there are currently over 40 Sudbury schools around the world. Certain facets of the model separate it from other democratic schools and free schools, although there are evident similarities. One central defining aspect is the non-compulsory nature of the model and the equal, nonjudgmental treatment of all activities (within the bounds of school rules regarding behavior and conduct) which results in a great de-emphasis of classes and other activities normally emphasized for their educational value.
